Carman Landscape Architecture Studio

Together with his wife Elaine, John L. Carman, PLA, FASLA has generously donated $25,000 for the John L. Carman Landscape Architecture Collaborative Studio, an undergraduate studio in the Gray Design Building.

As founder and Senior Principal at the Lexington- and Louisville-based firm CARMAN, John has been a tireless advocate for the landscape architecture profession and for the importance of collaboration across planning, design, and engineering disciplines.

John has amplified his career on the state and national level with extensive involvement in professional organizations including serving as International President of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards. John was inducted into the ASLA Council of Fellows in 2002 as a result of his works and service to the profession. He firmly believes that allied professions of landscape architecture, civil engineering, architecture and more all benefit from working together rather than in silos.

"I feel that the great partnerships we have with many design firms has elevated our profession's voice in improving the built environment," Carman said.

John Carman was a member of the Department of Landscape Architecture's first graduating class in 1976. In the years since, he has given back to the department by participating in juries, serving as an adjunct professor, and providing scholarships and internships for UKLA students. His firm has also hired many alums of UK's Department of Landscape Architecture.

In partnership with other design groups, Carman's firm has left its mark on the University of Kentucky campus through projects such as the Mining and Minerals Building, the Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building, the Gatton Student Center expansion, as well as various projects for UK HealthCare and the new Gray Design Building. CARMAN has also collaborated with design teams on public and private projects across many sectors throughout the Commonwealth.
