Centre College is a small liberal arts college located in Danville, Kentucky, with incredible facilities integrated within a 160-acre campus.
CARMAN, in conjunction with Hastings + Chivetta Architects, performed the site design for the new Campus Center that will replace the existing dining hall at the east edge of campus. The new two-story, 46,560-square foot facility is a $12.6 million project and achieved LEED Silver certification.
The Campus Center includes the student life office as well as designated spaces for student organizations, meetings, and student socialization. There are four meeting spaces of various sizes that provide flexibility for meetings, meals and gathering. There are two dining facilities: Cowan Dining Commons and a Grille & Snack Bar that provide deli sandwiches, burgers, pizza, smoothies, coffee, etc. There is comfortable interior and exterior gathering and socializing spaces for students, faculty and staff, including informal seating, fireplaces, and a gaming area. Exterior plaza design accomodates large student gatherings and events as well as informal gathering opportunities.
CARMAN's role was to ensure the new building integrated within the context of the historic campus. The sustainable design has insured no degradation to an environmentally sensitive sinkhole area on the campus that has been preserved for a campus open space. To that end, underground detention was utilized to prevent excess water flow into the existing karst feature. CARMAN was responsible for design, engineering and permitting of all site stormwater management systems and utilities.
