Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital

Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation | Lexington, Kentucky

In 1950, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital opened a 50-bed convalescent home for children during the polio epidemic. As polio declined, the emphasis changed to include treatment of spinal cord injuries for children and young adults.  As the census increased for this additional population, the Kentucky Easter Seal Society, the Board of Trustees, and the Kentucky Bureau of Rehabilitation added the rehabilitation program and expanded to the current 108-bed facility.  The most recent expansion increased capacity by approximately 30 percent, which required significant improvements to the healthcare campus.

CARMAN served as the site design consultant for the $40 million campus and facility expansion, providing a full array of site engineering and design services, including stormwater management, right of way improvements and complete vehicular area redesign.  Memorial courtyards for patient and staff use were also designed by CARMAN.  Included in the campus transformation was expanded parking, multiple drop-off locations, and siting for the building expansion.
