Commonwealth of Kentucky | Louisville, Kentucky | 2020

The Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology Center for the Jefferson Community and Technical College occupies a key portion of Louisville’s downtown along 1st Street. CARMAN, serving as a consultant to the architect, provided Civil Engineering, Landscape Architectural, and Urban Design services for the new JCTC facility.

CARMAN’s involvement in the project included a broad spectrum of services that includes engagement with community and Metro agencies in addition to the various JCTC stakeholders.

Highlights of the site planning and design includes:

  • Assessment of mobility along 1st Street with recommendations for a road diet along the corridor between Jacob and College Street. This road diet will include vehicular lane width reductions, a new dedicated bike lane at street level, increased pedestrian sidewalk widths and insertion of intersection bump-outs that will reduce pedestrian crossing times;

  • Streetscape improvements with sidewalk amenities, street trees along the west side of 1st Street and removal of overhead utilities along 1st Street;

  • Alley improvements between Jacob and College Streets to accommodate utility relocations and improved mobility of vehicles providing service to the new JCTC AMIT facility;.

  • Construction of new green infrastructure that will capture all site stormwater discharge into a subsurface infiltration basin with a significant reduction of discharge into the combined sewer system.
