MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY Intramural and Practice Soccer Complex
Commonwealth of Kentucky Division of Engineering | Morehead, Kentucky | 2013
Morehead State University engaged the office of CARMAN to design the Intramural and Practice Soccer Complex on the western edge of the existing athletic campus.
CARMAN utilized a synthetic slit film turf system with crumb rubber infill. Challenges to overcome included Morrow Street along with a campus steam tunnel and underground culvert which bisected the site into two unusable halves. The upper portion of the site was previously utilized as a trailer park and the lower portion of the site was historically used as greek housing.
Through the creative use of segmental retaining walls on both the upper and lower ends of the site, CARMAN was able to relocate Morrow Street to the upper side of the site through the modification of the Eagle Center parking lot. The steam tunnel was waterproofed and covered approximately 5 feet making room for the synthetic turf system. The underground culvert was modified in location and size and a detention basin was designed the upper reaches of the site to prevent sand and silt runoff from entering the new culvert system and provide maintenance staff a location for its continued removal.
